Ministries and Missions of the Highland Park Church

The Board of Deacons of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church leads our congregation in ministries of compassion and witness through the loving example of Jesus Christ. These ministries and missions extend from our local area to distant regions of the world.

A recent project overseen by our Deacons was our active support in building a house with Habitat for Humanity of Lake County. The house was built with our participation in cooperation with other area churches in providing funds, leadership in planning and hours of hard physical labor in construction.

Another recent project was Rebuilding Together, a program where individuals help rebuild existing homes of Lake County residents with little or no resources.

Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April)
About 35 people were involved in this year's house. Our recipients were a brother and sister living in Zion. The sister (Lorraine) is retired and suffers from Fibromyalgia and her brother (Dominick) is a paraplegic. The main focus of our work was to equip the house for Dominick's disability. We installed a handicap ramp along with a small deck and replaced the bathtub with a low-rise handicap tub with shower surround. In addition, we replaced the bathroom door and paneling, cleared out 40 years of accumulation from their basement, cleaned and calked the gutters, replaced the front storm door and did a general spring cleaning of their yard. We don't always see the impact our work has on these families, but with this year's project it was evident as we watched Dominick roll down his new deck and ramp wearing a mile-wide smile.
